David Taylor Zoo Vet is retiring

This is for general chat on any WSFP issue. Have you got a QUESTION to pose for other WSFP members? Did you construct a ride at WSFP? Did you work there and you can tell a funny story? Anything other than the straight visitor entries can go here.

David Taylor Zoo Vet is retiring

Retirement of David Taylor, International Zoo Veterinary Group, UK
Please pass this message onto anyone who might have worked with David in the past.

Dear Friend,

You may be interested to know that after 50 years working with zoo animals, Dr David Taylor (former vet of Windsor Safari Park) is finally retiring from practice.

We are compiling a surprise album to commemorate the occasion, and are trying to track down as many of his friends and former colleagues as we can, to contribute a memory or message of good wishes. If you are in touch with any of the former staff from WSP who would know David, we would be most grateful if you would put us in touch please. Any old relics from WSP – maps, guides, ticket stubs, and photographs showing David that you could perhaps photocopy or scan for us would also be a nice touch to ad to the album if you have them.

David is retiring from full-time duties at International Zoo Veterinary Group in March 2008. Whilst David will still act as a consultant to the practice, we would like to mark the occasion of his retirement at this time.

During his 50 year career as a zoo vet, David pioneered many of the techniques still used in zoo medicine today, and was one of the first vets to make zoo and wildlife work his full-time job. He is well respected and well liked by his clients worldwide, and we hope that you will join us in celebrating his achievements, and sending him good wishes for the future.

We would be very grateful if you could send us back, as soon as possible, a photograph of yourself, plus a note – good wishes or sharing a memory – for David. (X-rated is fine, but we can’t guarantee anonymity!)

We are hoping to keep this book A SURPRISE, so please don’t mention it to David if you speak to him.

We would appreciate all responses no later than Friday 7th March please.

Please send them by email to office@izvg.co.uk or post to:

International Zoo Vet Group
Keighley Business Centre
South Street
Keighley
West Yorkshire BD21 1AG

If you wish to contribute towards a gift for David, please telephone us for more information on 01535 605033 or send us an email.

Thank you for helping us to give David the retirement celebration he deserves!
Best wishes

I first met David when I worked at the Reptile House at Windsor Safari Park in 1975-80.

We next bumped into each other when I worked at Marineland Cote d'Azur in the South of France in 1982-84.

David is a top man, bought some excellent pink champagne (woffed down with copious olives) and was our most favourite guest at the Marineland.

I am now Curator at Auckland Zoo, New Zealand, and always regale my friends with tales of this larger than life character and wonderful vet. In my office I have (nearly) all of David's books, alas none signed.

Cheers David - a true legend, a brilliant raconteur (remember the one about the embarrassing accident in the hotel room, and how to get out of being caught?!) and an all round good egg!

If ever you're down under...

Best
