Cheers Gforce, wiki is usually blob on about stuff like this, basically seems to be creeping into rural areas more and then hitting towns i'd recommend looking through as it seems to give frank descriptions of this drug

like typecast says its pretty much a white powder, looks like cocaine, the effects are more MDMA/ecstacy, however it does seem to be taking over from cocaine as its taking by snorting it and goes for around £10 to £20 a gram depends where you getting it, most internet compaines seling it for around £10

the dangers are real as well, no research done on it, all we know is that its synthetic cathonine from which is from the KHAT plant (southerners may recognise this drug) in that its the active part of Khat but essentially man made and thats why it is not under the UK law, its classed as a research chemical and often touted as plant food (in fact that one of its names also).

Dangers are severe heahaches, nose bleeds (Due to the poweder being slightly crystal and does not absorb the same as cocaine on the mucus membrane), hallucinatons, seems to be really bad mixed with other drugs, certainly being linked with deaths and self mutilations! and the best bit is that people have reported of its moreish nature, so if they have a few grams they seem to have the lot in one night

I barely get interested in 'new' drugs as its usually tosh and fades out and peple go back to the usual suspects, but this seems to be taking over because of its cheapness and effects lasting longer than coke and smaller downsides to that of coke, hope this run down gives you a better idea of it and more aware of the 'new' stuff out there

Denmark: Denmark's Minister for Health and Prevention Jakob Axel Nielsen banned "mephedrone", "flephedrone" and ethylcathinone on Dec 18, 2008. (from Ministry of Health and Prevention press release)

Finland: Through the Medicines Act, 4-methylmethcathinone is classified as a "medicinal product", making it illegal to manufacture, import, possess, sell, or transfer it without a prescription. (from, date unknown and, Sep 5 2008)[1]

Germany: Plans to make mephedrone illegal in Germany were announced in November 2009 but the bill must be approved by the Bundesrat before it is made illegal.[19]

Israel: In December 2007, 4-methylmethcathinone was added to Israel's list of controlled substances, making it illegal to buy, sell, or possess.[1]

Norway: The "Derivatbestemmelsen" is an Analog Act-type law in Norway that controls 4-methylmethcathinone, Bk-MBDB, Bromo-Dragonfly, 1,4-butanediol, GBL, and MBDB. See (last updated April 29 2009)[1]

Sweden: Classified as a "health hazard" or "hazardous substance" ("hälsofarlig vara") pending further legislation, a ban on 4-methylmethcathinone went into effect on December 15, 2008, making its sale illegal. On June 15, 2009 it was classified as a narcotic.[1][20]

United Kingdom: Mephedrone/4MMC is currently not covered by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, psychiatrists have lobbied for it to be banned.[11] It is, however, an offense to sell it for human consumption. On the 20th of November 2009 it was announced by county Durham police that anyone found in possession of mephedrone will be arrested on suspicion of being in possession of an illegal substance such as cocaine or amphetamines.[1]

United States: 4-Methylmethcathinone is unscheduled in the United States. It is possible that it could be considered an analog of a scheduled substance, in which case, sales for human consumption or possession with the intent to ingest could be prosecuted under the Federal Analog Act.

I've never heard of it, can you enlighten us as to what it is and it's effects etc.

I would imagine if it appears similar to cocaine, as someone mentioned they would probably be arrested for class A offence.

No idea. I expect most officers will arrest on suspicion because no doubt some chancers with illegal drugs are already trying to pass them off as the legal versions.

Ok as you may know I am a drugs worker (At the moment! hopefully not for much longer!) I was wondering if anyone has had any instances of coming across Mephedrone/MCAT/bubbles/4MMC/Meiow meiow or whatever your area is calling it! Im interested not because of your role (im forever getting told PCSO is not a social worker role - which I know!!) im just wondering what your force policy is on it, if there is one yet? and any info on whats happening around the country!

Im already aware of the drug, effects all that i was wondering about the enforcement side of things

For instance Durham at present is arrest on possession send away for testing

this is obviously because it looks similar to coke and on that basis there can arrest on suspision on Class A even tho they cant follow it through...yet
