The thing is we all have to go through the same process as someone new coming to the force. Each force should look at the PCSO's PDR and interview them instead of going through the whole app process and selection day. Do you all agree?

Definitely a bad idea to convert wholesale... :slwoot:

:slwo: A PCSO who goes and deals with all the crimes is not a good PCSO in my book. A good PCSO is there to do what it says on the tin....walk & talk. meet & greet and bring back Intel for the PC to act upon, team efffort. If the PCSO is dealing with all the crimes.....who is gathering the basic info from the streets!!!!.

:slwo: Good for you, that is what it is all about, enjoying your job.

I have always wondered what is a good PC or PCSO....one who locks up 100 prisoners a year or one who locks no one up and gives everyone a warning. A PCSO who walks 8 hrs a day meeting & greeting with joe public or one who attends all crimes by car, takes details & crimes it. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...............

easy answer and that is to get the PC to be able to do what the PCSO's do now but like always the PC is tied down with stupid paperwork

Some would be excellent Im sure so the person who said that they'd all be awful is generalising too much....

However, it shouldnt be assumed that just because someone has done a great job as a PCSO for a few years that they would make good cops.
Remember, PCSOs and PCs are different......
so ture

from what I am told and my yearly reviews
I am a good PCSO
I enjoy my role

Unless they were beat managers. Both enjoy the slow pace, being given the time to do jobs fully and completely without being bogged down. I doubt either would cope tbh. I don't think I would either, the idea of drowning in red tape sickens me.[/quote]Yes, me too, there are too many PCSOs in my opinon that are like that, but then we're all different. I understand where you were coming from now though.

Just to add a nice little twist...

I know a PCSO who turned PC wanted to switch back and then...

Failed the PCSO interview.

Yes recruitment could have let one slip through the net, but said person is now an untouchable PC that it's good enough to be a PCSO. :slbell:

... and someone hasn't been reading posts very closely - it is dated back in December, 2009. So your dig just comes over as quite petty don't you think?

Someone hasn't been reading the news recently... search "police cuts" on BBC News - it'll explain everything you need to know :slroll:

Big Brother wrote:Agreed, I work with a couple of guys who are fantastic PCSOs. They've earnt the respect of colleagues and of the communities they serve. They have their own way of dealing with things and because of that they're the main reason why crime has dropped dramatically in the area. However they'd make awful cops unless they were turned into beat managers.
