I was leafing through my forces Policing plan which is available to the public and in it there are budget forecasts listing projected expenditure right up until 2016. PCSOs are listed as an expense until 2016 so it certainly looks like my force is planning on having us around until then.
At the end of the day though, we won't know until it happens and I am trying not to get overly worked up about it all....

As I said...... Unison supported this move as in their view we do not face confrontation, so therefore why do we need defensive skills training! :-(
We have exactly them same. Its gone from a half day to 2 hours. All we are tought now is how to get away from wrist grabs, which in all my time as a door man, security etc no one ever tried to grab my wrists lol. Its supposidly a non confrontational job, yet the ammount of PC's available when i need one is mostly zero meaning I can no longer call for back up, so the likelyhood of it is, I will have to use some form of defence to protect someone or myself. lets hope they grab my wrists or ive had it :slwoot: :slwoot: :slwoot: :slwoot: :slwoot:
Sadly that's the way public service is going insofar as training. Most of it is watered down. Where training was all day its condensed into a couple of hours. Its the same in the NHS.

Tick box exercise I call it. Pointless.

Maybe you should invite someone from Unison to join you on an insight patrol on a Friday night. See if your lack of training can stop them getting robbed or assaulted! My union fees would be spent in the pub instead of wasting them on a ridiculous excuse for a trade union!

Our OST is meant to be a full day, but normally lasts about 5 or 6 hours. We go through a video presentation (probably like your powerpoint), to make sure we all know the mnenomics and the force policy etc. Then comes the fun bit in the gym. Pushing/blocking/hitting/knife defence/pre-emptive strikes/escaping from holds/restraint holds, etc etc. Always worthwhile, always learn something new. The trainers keep it fun too. Not too serious.

This is not my view, but that of the union that I pay to represent my views!! So they tell me..... lol

Vote with your feet, like me and be £12 a month better off!

I was in the union 3 months, in the three months 2 of my colleagues needed union help....

One after a period of sickness he wanted advice and a rep to come to a meeting.
- The "help and advice" consisted of an emailed link to the force policy on the intranet (great help when off sick).
- The rep didn't bother turning up to the meeting no excuse given.

The other had a discipline / performance issue and meeting with HR and managers
- No rep available for the meetings despite HR and Sgts offering a multitude of dates, ended up with an expirenced non-union PCSO sitting in

They was then told, sorry no money available for union subs the month by 7 officers from my neighbourhood. Incidentally the latter officer is now one of the best performing. Can't say i have missed them.

That is laughable! we get a whole day of self defence training and we incorporate first aid as well, how does your union justify this ?

I wish it was mate!

Ours consists of a morning faffing about with making presentations then about 1hr pushing each other around after lunch.

Every year we say the morning bit should be a powerpoint or ncalt then the 1hr physical bit just a hour out of your day somewhere. Rather than spreading the whole team through the year they could do the physical bit for the entire team/division in 1 day.

When rasied as an issue to our union we where told that they would not fight it as they where in favour of it.. A d that told us :-(

can you expand on the above ?
Yes, please expand. How on earth can someone risk assess a PCSO's job and give you a bloody powerpoint? How ridiculous!!!
