we have MIB cards, the numbers not a secret as you have to be on duty to use and sometimes control rooms will do it for you.
As they haven't shown the number i won't put it on either.

Ahh right. I thought the MIB number was a general one... Right, I'll ask around ta.
Thing is I DON'T think the people in mind are genuine. Its all to do with drug dealing scum and how they use fleet vehicles from 'legitimate companies' to traffic drugs about and sew as much confusion as possible in terms of identifying who they are.
I can't begin to describe how much I hate these people. There arn't actually words in the dictionary to summarise it... I need to lie down and have my medication now. ha ha

True. And TBH you won't even need that. If the person you've stopped is a genuine trader they'll KNOW who insures the car. Get the number and ring them direct. Traders policies normally come with conditions as to the use of the vehicle as well so it's best to speak directly to the company anyway. We had an incident similar to this a few years ago where a guy kept using trade policies to insure his cars, but we did him because he'd been breaching the conditions.

I would run a D/L check as well! My colleague and I stopped someone once who didn't have insurance and I thought it was odd that he did carry his driving license on him. Ran a routine check and it turned out he only held a provisional and he had been driving on it for 10 years without being caught!!!

With "trader's policy" most actual traders would probably being carrying their documents. Also depend where and when you stop them is their vehicle actually being used in the trade of that vehicle.

example; a person driving on a "trader's policy" who is collecting scrap is technically not trading the vehicle so is technically not insured.

Always double check with MIB and read all small prints if the trader is carrying their documents.

When you say who its with do you mean what insurance company their with??
If they don't know then what? Lets assume there are no PC's available for 40 mins cos' their tied up with jobs.
Yep ask who the insurance company is and ring them or the mib helpline. As for a PC not being available, you can always take details do an mg11 and see a bobby, who should go round caution and report them for no insurance and persue a prosecution.

Agreed, if they've got a traders policy they'll know who it's with nd you can check.

if it goes past the 30 mins detention power I dont think there is much you can do apart from issue the warning S59. You would have a power to ask name and address etc.. check if insurance was valid at a later time and statement it for summons by a PC.

If it was dangerous, careless or inconsiderate driving I guess you could get a PC to send them a Notice of Intended Prosecution within 14 days (summons for the bad driving, statement again) and do them for that.

What do you do if you stop a car for S.59 and it comes back no insurance? Driver says its a trade policy but you suspect he's bulling and has played this game many a time.
