The process for applying for "Police Records" on yourself has changed radically from last year and previous years.
In the old days people would just be greeted with one system known as "SUBJECT ACCESS,"
1) here is an example of the MET POLICE Subject Access Form.
Read the fairly good Met Police explanatory information as well, but that form up until 12 months ago was the only form you needed.
Now, depending on what you are going to use the information for - there are three to choose from!
Now the only time you will use the original Subject Access form will be if you are looking for information from a Police Force database e.g Crime Reports e.g. You are in the middle of a domestic violence dispute and need to see a print out of 'the crime report'.
2) If you are trying to get a job and the employer is demanding that you provide a print out of your previous convictions, it will be a waste of time trying to do that using a Subject Access form, incorrect application! You would need to comply with one of the two new systems now running since 2012.
For disclosures to an employer of your previous criminal history, go to http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/ you will see that there is no paper form, it's an application online or you can phone them (the site displays their phone no).
3) But if you need a criminal record check because you are emigrating to another country, or just need a VISA, going with either of the above 2 systems will get you nowhere!
http://www.acro.police.uk/ has been set up to provide Police Certificates for immigration purposes, or if you need a visa to travel to Australia, Belgium, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa or the United States of America.
They provide a paper form available on their site, print it out and have a really good read before thinking you can do it all in 5 minutes, there's a bit more to it than that and going to a police station with it won't help, as you need to send it off to ACRO, not your local police force.
IF YOU HAVE APPLIED ON ANY OF THESE THREE SYSTEMS IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS PLEASE REPLY WITH WHICH ONE AND WHAT YOUR EXPERIENCE WAS THIS CAN BE VERY CONFUSING FOR THE UNINITIATED NOW!
