KIT TO BUY THAT IS NOT SUPPLIED

Post by typecastboy » Mon Dec 01, 2008 11:29 pm

Jumping the gun again, but now I've passed Day 2, my mind goes on to kit that is supplied that is not really up to the job, like the torches, or kit which you need which is not supplied, like a big gun!

So what do you already serving PCSOs buy, or not buy. I think there may be a few upcoming PCSOs that would be interested in knowing.

Read the other post about torches, but what else?

There is a lot of kit that That I carry that is not supplied, like a surefire torch, a Leatherman Juice, another pouch and a wolly hat for lat night RTA's.

However was up with a local company the other day who supply firearms, sprays etc to the police and was having a go on the range with a Glock 17 converted to fire paint rounds... it was a bit of fun sadly we were no allowed to carry one on duty! :sltee:

On a serious note, I would not go out and buy anything until you start work and find out what you need.

Paintball, love it, wouldn't that be fun, to blast some hoodie with a few rounds of paint.

As for Arctic socks, great idea, but don't they do them in any other colours, rather than very 1980s WHITE???

Anyone else care to contribute?

A snood, never heard of that, but I'll look them up. Makes me feel cold already just thinking about it.

I've already got a Peli Versabrite on my list as well as, probably a Surefire, or maybe a Nightsearcher.

Anyone recommend some good thermals and socks especially?

It depends on what they're called where you live. Think of a scarf joined at both ends that is stretchy and fits tight to your neck.

I got a versabrite 3 and a tesco's LED torch as, sadly my budget wouldn't stretch to a surefire:
JEA wrote:Peli Versabrite III

Obviously to supplement a proper torch. It clips to your vest which means you can write/read by it without having to hold a torch in your mouth. The VBIII is actually quite bright and very convenient, it's bright enough to see the floor at your feet, look in through a car window or see the person you're talking to while leaving your hands free. Don't get the VBII, I did and the neck snapped from just tuning it on/off. The website I used replaced it for the VBIII at no extra cost.

Peli torches:

The VBIII (the cheapest site I could find and the one I used):
http://www.sailgb.com/p/versabrite_lll_led_light/

Tesco's own brand

These are awesome for the price.

3 Watt LED, 2x D cell £12!:
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.203-8191.aspx

4 Watt LED, 2x D cell £18!:
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.203-5039.aspx

They also have a 2x AA cell, 3 Watt one for £10 on their shelves but I couldn't find it on the website.

I have the 3 Watt, 2x D cell one. It comes with a belt pouch and is about the size of a folded asp so you can carry it all the time. The 4 Watt one is a bit bigger, like a large MagLite. The brightness is staggering, like a car headlight on full beam, it hurts to look at the LED. To put it in perspective a large D cell MagLite doesn't even make 1 Watt of power. They're well made, heavy construction. I would recomend them to everyone, especially when you consider the price.

The only downside is they have a very small tesco logo on the base, but it can be blacked out.
I also got this pouch for the tesco's torch.

I also bought a leatherman, and do use it loads (mainly for changing bulbs in the cars though!).

If you want socks, I swore by these in the Army. The double layer eliminates blisters, they're warm, comfy (and dry in your armpits overnight :slhi: ):

I carry an A-Z, and because part of my patch is rural-ish a cut down, laminated 1:25k OS map.

mj12cz's point is valid. I would resist buying loads before you start. You may waste money on stuff you may not need or may not be suitable.

Hey, thanks JEA, loads of good advice and links there. The socks look the bizzo, will definately get some of those.

I think I want to buy a 2 D cell torch, would like a 3 D cell, but I'm a bit concerned I might be using it as a weapon, or at least for defence, so I'll hold off getting one for now.

I want to get some boots, and I know there are other posts on the subject of boots, but there are soooo many different types, it's difficult to know what to get. I want something that has a good surface on top to shine, as I do like shiny footwear. Not wet look patent, you understand, but a good army shine.

I'm not too bothered about a Tesco logo, and looks like they are worth getting anyway. I have been looking at a Nightsearcher torch, which are rechargeable, so you don't have to keep changing batteries. 130 lumens, with a 2 1/2 hour life per charge. Anyone use them?

Saw one of the Bromley boys today (Coney Hall and Hayes), with a big D Cell hanging from his belt. Probably a 3 cell, about a foot long!

I find belt-keepers a useful addition to my equipment.
