PCSO who trawled PNC to check out her potential lovers

Lucy Bevan (outside court) checked everything from property they owned,
the cars they drove, any criminal convictions - and even researched one
hypothetical mother-in-law

Most singletons looking for love log-on to dating websites or go on blind dates.
But when you’re a police community support officer there is, of course, one further resource available.

For PCSO Lucy Bevan, 25, the police national computer was an invaluable tool when it came to checking on potential suitors.
She checked everything from property they owned, the cars they drove, any criminal convictions - and even researched one hypothetical mother-in-law.

After dating one man she met on patrol she checked his police file an astonishing 151 times in one month alone.
But her search for the perfect man landed her in court and yesterday she pleaded guilty to illegally obtaining personal information.
Bevan, who has since resigned from her post, was ordered to pay a £1115 fine for what was described in court as a ‘calamitous error of judgement’.
The former police officer joined the Northumbria force in March 2008 and was soon walking the beat in North Tyneside.
She was happily involved with a boyfriend at the time and looking forward to a promising career.
But when the relationship broke down a short time later she turned to men she met on the beat in the hope of finding love.
She then turned detective and trawled the police computer to decide whether they were marriage material, the court was told.
Bevan even used the secret system to find out information about a potential mother-in-law.
She was finally caught in September this year after concerns were raised about her relationship with one man on her patch.

Why would you? She must have had the intro from "proffesional Standards" at her initial training so she must have know what she was doing. And how did she get away with 151 checks in one month? I do 1 max 2 checks a day on average. I know all the PNC staff by name. Im sure they would question it if I was continually ringing in. She must have some mental health issues..

possibly and I do feel a little sorry for her

YES it was a ‘calamitous error of judgement’, as she admitted herself

however, she wasn't doing checks for someone else

it wasn't to aid criminals

it wasn't a profit making enterprise

did she NEED to be dismissed? yes but only as an example to others - nothing more

Given that it is the newspaper report we are taking out facts from here then i would use a pinch of salt and possibly say that it maybe wasnt PNC but was perhaps the force local system she was using with pictures and local data.

However some PCSOs where i work do have PNC access and can access it direct from the station/force terminals. But surely 151 times is overkill!

I have access to PNC as does all the other PCSO's, it doesnt seem to be an issue in our office at all, no one has even joked about looking up their friends/partners/collegues. Sounds to me like she did it once, she didnt get caught, then she got addicted to looking up people. Maybe she thought it was like facebook?!?

Falkor- I agree with your view on this. She didn't harm or terrorise anyone, and made no profit from it.

In a nutshell, she simply abused the system (not much different to using your work computer in work time playing video games). I wonder if a letter of misconduct and a fine would have been an appropriate and sufficient punishment in this case. To get the sack in addition seems a bit harsh to me- although I understand it (to set an example to others).
I may not agree with what you have to say- but I'll defend to the death (well, almost) your right to say it.

May the Reasonable Force be with you !

Power of arrest for PCSOs for 'as and when' - s24a PACE & common law (i.e. BoP) using s3 CLA 1967

I'm a PCSO, I will WATCH you get your head kicked in (as per force policy)
