Entire police team sacked for playing poker and backgammon and watching TV while on duty

An entire south London neighbourhood policing team has been axed after officers were found playing playing poker, watching television and cleaning golf clubs while on duty, it emerged today.

Seven officers in total resigned or were dismissed from the Safer Neighbourhood Team in the Mottingham and Chislehurst North ward in Bromley, south east London.

The disciplinary action followed an undercover operation by the Metropolitan Police Service's (MPS) Directorate of Professional Standards in 2010.

A source told The Sun some of the officers did not even change into their uniforms while they were at work.

Under fire: Four Police Community Support Officers resigned

One sergeant and a police officer were sacked after the Met's disciplinary panel found them guilty of gross misconduct.

Another officer and three of the team's community support officers resigned, while a fourth was dismissed.

Three of the officers were also charged with criminal offences as well as police misconduct.

In a statement, the Met said: 'The disciplinary panel heard evidence that officers from the team had played backgammon and poker whilst on duty, watched TV in the office, frequently failed to go out on patrol, had not worked full tours of duty and also claimed overtime that had not been worked.

'In addition, one officer had gone out for runs during the working day whilst a further officer cleaned his golf clubs in the office.

'These activities appear to have taken place at the expense of policing duties, such as patrolling the local area.'

Commander Allan Gibson, head of the MPS Directorate of Professional Standards, said: 'These officers let the whole of the service down with their behaviour - but more importantly they let down their local community.

'There is no place for lazy attitudes in the MPS and those who are found to be failing in their duties will be held to account.'

Neighbourhood teams were introduced by the Met in 2004 and subsequently rolled out across the country.

Former Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair described the initiative as 'the greatest development' in community policing in the last 30 to 40 years.

I cannot believe this is true? :sloop:

With so many unemployed people around its an absolute disgrace. They deserve what they got. I cant abide laziness. It bugs me more than rudeness...

Not my place to. A forum is no place to put details like that. I know one of the PCSOs who is now a bus driver, disgraceful by all concerned!

Sorry BB, I know it's boring, but as I'm often reminded this is a, sort of, public forum, and I'm not about to put stuff on here that I might regret!!!

I guess it's because it was a whole team, including the skipper and PC, although they don't usually miss an opportunity!

I take it this is the DPS "bugging" investigation that TCB was going on about previously?
