Police Officers and Police Staff must only access and use information held on their Police Force's or national police database for policing purposes. Whilst the vast majority of us know and understand this, there are still too many cases of officers and staff making checks on family members, friends or looking up crimes where they are the victim /witness. None of these reasons is a bona fide policing purpose.
Any access of any system for a purpose other than a bona fide policing purpose is a breach of data protection and will be treated as misconduct in accordance with your force's policy. When you are a victim or witness to crime yourself it is very tempting to access these system's thinking you are justified but it is a huge risk!!
