Yeh, when we go digital later this year on the PDA"s with the pocket printout for PNC checks.
That sounds cool, however with Lincs Police being so strapped for cash I guess its not going to happen for us.

Can you internet access on them !

I've heard it's going to be a nationwide thing. How quick they'll phase it in I just don't know :? Sounds a good bit of kit though.

How handy is that going to be for us on our patrol? Can't wait :P

It"s definately coming to us BTP PCSO"s.
Also should be getting new tac vest with all the pockets in so that the pda, printer, cuffs, airwave, pnb etc, will fit into the pockets as in the piccy!.

1 PCSO has already been isuued with their own vest, except every one keeps thinking she"s a proper copper!. 8)

And the result is BTP 1 , MOP 0 !:

Having just moved from Cambridgeshire Police to South Wales Police Ive noticed big differences between the forces. Cambs have nearly all powers they could be given except cuffs but SWP have only 12 powers none of which are really useful when dealing with ASB. I used to write crime reports and statements now I dont. I seem to be in an area with very few problems, which in one way is good but leaves me wishing to move to an area that has isues that need dealing with. Need something to get my teeth in to! :bh:

In my division we take all manor of crime reports, we even have a crime work load as th IO. All well and good and i dont mind but it just means more time in the nick and less time on the streets.

Doesn't this sort of defeat the role of a PCSO to be the eyes and ears if you're stuck in the nick??

What level of crime do you investigate??

Do you do Crime Reports?

Post by Nogsy » Wed Mar 14, 2007 6:07 pm

As the officer currently tasked with re-writing the PCSO training course for my force, this is an interesting thread. The actual task of completing a crime report shouldn't really tie anyone to the station. It is, after all, a form filling exercise- or even a telephone call depending on the force. The issue would be do you understand the points to prove for the crime so that you may recognise it? We all know how members of the public will say things like, "I've been robbed" when in fact they have only been the victim of a theft. So it is down to the reporting officer to make a decision as to what the actual offence is. But this would also apply to any offence, including those that you may report for summons or write a ticket for. I have often wondered how many PCSOs have written PND for s.5 Public Order offences without knowing what the actual points to prove and defences are????
In Cambs, PCSOs may only take crime reports for:
• Theft (not burglaries or deceptions)
• Criminal damage
• Theft of and from motor vehicle
• Cycle crime
Within the timetable all new PCSOs in Cambs will get an input on those offences, covering points to prove and defences. With that knowledge, and a level 1 interview course, they can also take witness/ victim statements for those offences. Once again, it’s not necessary to do these at the station. For that reason I do not consider this to be outside their high profile uniform patrolling role. After all, you are not just a body in uniform.
Keep up the good work folks.
