POLICE ALLOWED TO PROSECUTE IN RED-TAPE BLITZ

POLICE will be given new powers to prosecute drunken thugs, vandals and careless drivers without having to consult the Crown Prosecution Service.
Home Secretary Theresa May has unveiled a series of changes which extend current police powers.

The move could allow police to prosecute an estimated 91,000 additional criminal cases each year.

Mrs May told the Association of Chief Police Officers' conference: "Giving police more powers to prosecute offenders will slash unnecessary bureaucracy."

The measures will cover criminal damage cases under the value of £5,000, some alcohol and public order offences and driving without due care and attention.

Police can only use the powers when defendants plead guilty.
